  1. The Hour I First Believed - Wally Lamb

High school teacher and teacher of creative writing at the University of Connecticut Wally Lamb, has only written three novels so far but since I read his first novel a few years ago, I knew that I would love everything he writes!

The Hour I First Believed deals with a high school teacher and his wife, a nurse who also works at the Columbine High School in Colorado. Caelum Quirk is away to attend to a sickly family member in Connecticut when two high school students go on a shooting rampage at the school. (This is actually a true part of the story, backed up by real life transcripts of video footage of the two boys who committed these crimes). His wife, Maureen, survives but suffers from post traumatic stress disorder and gets dependent on tranquilisers.

They move back to Caelum's family farm in Connecticut, where he embarks on a journey to reconstruct the lives of his ancestors, confronting their secrets and finally realising how his past has formed him into the (cynical) man he became and how there is always hope for the future. The back cover write-up
expands: "...His personal quest for meaning becomes a mythic journey that is both contemporary and quintessentially American.... it is an extraordinary work of huge scope and ambition, and is utterly unforgettable."

It's a brick of a book at 723 pages and definitely not a quick read. I was so absorbed by it for a few weeks that as soon as I had finished it, my dogs stole it off my bedside table and tried to tear it apart! (I think they've had enough of me reading!) Luckily they failed and save for a few tooth marks, my book is still intact!

Wally Lamb is best known for his second book, I Know This Much Is True, although I also loved his first book, She Came Undone.

  3. Despite their language problems, an increasing number of expatriates try to make friends within local communities, which goes against the stereotype of the “typical expat” that doesn’t try to integrate into the local society.
